Technikum Laubholz inaugurates biolaboratory for sustainable biotechnological innovations

Göppingen, October 1, 2025 – The grand opening of the new biolaboratory at Technikum Laubholz sends a strong signal for the future of the bioeconomy in Baden-Württemberg.

The laboratory is a central component of biotechnological research and development and is intended to serve as an innovation platform for transforming hardwood into high-quality bio-based products.

The biolaboratory was officially opened on October 1 in the presence of Peter Hauk, Minister for Food, Rural Areas, and Consumer Protection Baden-Württemberg. Together with representatives from politics, science, business, and the press, the laboratory was officially inaugurated – a symbolic moment that underscores the importance of bio-based innovations for the region.

The biolaboratory combines microbiological and molecular biological work, bioprocess development, bioconversions, and the development of bio-based materials and functional additives. One of the goals is to make side streams such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin usable as valuable bases for new materials. This creates bio-based alternatives that can replace products made from fossil raw materials and be incorporated into sustainable cycles.

Biotechnology is considered a key technology for the transformation to a climate-neutral economy. It combines biological knowledge with technical implementation and creates solutions for the central challenges of our time: health, nutrition, climate protection, and environmental protection. The industry is one of the most dynamic growth areas in Germany, with high innovation potential and increasing relevance for industrial applications. This makes the biolaboratory a driving force for cooperation between industry and science, which will secure the long-term competitiveness of Baden-Württemberg as a business location.
