Start of KIckBio Phase II: Development of AI for Optimizing Nanocellulose Production at Technikum Laubholz

Göppingen, April 10, 2024 – Technikum Laubholz announces the commencement of the second phase of the KIckBio project, supported by the Ministry of Food, Rural Affairs, and Consumer Protection of Baden-Württemberg.

KIckBio Phase II seamlessly follows the successful completion of the first phase, which was funded by the European Union and achieved its objectives on November 30, 2023. The primary goal of the first phase was to establish a production facility for fully automated process optimization in the production of nanocellulose.

The second phase of the KIckBio project focuses on developing a platform algorithm using existing machine learning technologies. This algorithm will take over the automatic process optimization of the nanocellulose production facility built in Phase I. With the use of predefined raw materials, particularly cellulose powder, artificial intelligence (AI) will create an optimized production recipe for nanocellulose with predefined quality standards. Optimization criteria such as production time and energy consumption are prioritized.

The continuation of the KIckBio project signifies a significant step towards technological innovation and efficiency enhancement by combining advanced technologies such as AI, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and Digital Twin for AI-driven process optimization. These pioneering approaches not only enhance productivity but also promote sustainability and competitiveness in production processes. The entire project team expresses gratitude to the project sponsor for supporting this challenging and timely project.

Technikum Laubholz is a new independent non-university research facility. We develop innovative and high-quality applications for hardwood. Differentiation through innovation, sustainability, individualization and a focus on maximum added value.
